Appetite For Construction

By Ted Yeager

Everyday a lot of us are hard at work of some kind, building appetites of construction. In the mornings we really dig having a good breakfast. In the afternoon we become handy with our lunches, and, in the evenings at dinner we all become certified forklift drivers. We take our forks and then drive them into our plates of food and then we lift them up so we can drive them into our faces.

Modern Family Review

By Joe Siciliano

Created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan, “Modern Family” is the laugh-out-loud funny comedy sitcom that revolves around three families that are interrelated through Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill), his son Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and his daughter Clare Dunphy (Julie Bowen). The families meet for family functions, around the neighborhood, and cross-family bonding. The other family members are Jay’s second wife Gloria Pritchett (Sofia Vergara), Manny Delgado (Rico Rodriguez), Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell), his daughters Haley and Alex Dunphy (Sarah Hyland and Ariel Winter), his son Luke Dunphy (Nolan Gould), Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet), and Lily Tucker-Pritchett (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons). The series is presented in a mockumentary-style format, just like both hugely popular sitcoms “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation”. It has received positive reviews from television critics, not to mention many awards and nominations. “Modern Family” first aired on ABC in 2009 and has had six totally hilarious seasons so far (there’s a seventh seven coming out in the fall of 2015). I have been such a big fan of the show since 2014, and my favorite characters are Cam, Mitch, Phil, and Claire because the actors who play them are so fun to watch. I love it so much and I’m so amazed by it for all the right reasons!

Why Me?

By Lorena Torres

Why do I have to get in trouble

What did I do wrong

Why do I have to be the one

To take the blame for what you said

Why do I have to be the oldest

And take the blame for what you do

I didn’t get a chance to explain myself

You assumed I would take it and you didn’t care

Why did my mom have to die of cancer

I still needed her

Why did I have to grow up fast

And be the parent for my siblings

Why do I have to be alone

With no family

And no one to look up to

I have no one

Why do I have to be a liar

I didn’t do anything wrong

It was their fault

Why me?

The Lost Treasure

By Vincent Cochran, Pro Lewis, Mitchell Graves, Regina Johnson

Somebody found a map on the ground. When they bent down to pick it up they started coughing. The man looks at the map but it is in a language he doesn’t understand. The man gets angry. The sun starts to rise and the man puts on his headphones to calm down and relax. Once he feels better the man looks at the map again and the map shows a path that leads to an ancient city filled with treasure. He takes a closer look and sees an island with skulls and crossbones.

The man starts to walk in the direction that the map points. Eventually he gets to a beach where he looks for the evil island that’s marked on the map. “Ouch!” The man looks at the sand and sees something sticking out. He starts digging and pulls out a shield. “This will be great to protect me from skeletons.” He looks out to sea again and sees a boat approaching. The man starts to feel scared because he realizes that the boat is filled with pirates. A cannon ball flies towards the man and he holds up his shield at the last minute. The cannon ball flies back towards the pirates and explodes. Once the boat gets to the beach the man looks inside it. He jumps back. The boat is filled with beautiful girls! His mouth drops to the ground and he says, “Hey beautiful!” Suddenly the girls pull out swords and attack the man. “Get off me!” he cries. The man holds up his shield to stop the blows from the swords. He pulls fireworks out of his pockets and sets them off scaring away the pirates.

The sun began to set and the man ran along the beach towards a dark cave filled with spiders. When he gets close to the cave a squid came out of the cave and scared the man. “Ahhh!!” screamed the man. Before he knew it the squid had crawled back inside the cave. He follows the squid and the cave is filled with music. He follows the sound of the music deeper and deeper into the cave. He pulls out his treasure map to figure out where he is at. He needs to find an underground bridge that will take him to the island. The man looks around and sees a funny symbol on the wall that looks like a star. He kept walking deeper into the cave and it got so dark that he couldn’t see; it was like he was blindfolded. Suddenly bright lights started flying towards him. They were fire balls! The man held up his shield to block them but at least he could see again. BANG! Something went pop but the man couldn’t see what it was. He starts to run away from the bang, and without realizing it, he crosses the underground bridge.

He’s finally on the island with the skull and cross bones. He pulls out his map again and sees that the X is right where he’s standing. He starts to dig in the sand and pulls out a treasure chest. A butterfly lands on the chest and the man looks at how beautiful it is. He opens the treasure chest and finds a shiny helmet inside. The man puts the helmet on and everything around him changes. He realizes that he is looking into the future. He picks up the treasure chest and starts to walk along the beach. The treasure chest gets heavier and heavier. The man puts the chest down and looks inside it. It’s filled with potion. The man takes a sip of potion and feels something appear in his hand. He looks down and sees a key. The man uses it to unlock the treasure chest one last time and it is filled with gold.

Mom

By Lorena Torres

My mom loved me the

minute I was born.

She will take care of me

as long as she can.

My mom maybe sick

but she will work through it.

She works hard

so she can provide me with my needs.

My mom maybe gone

but she is still taking care of me.

She is an angel

who watches over me.

My mom means everything

and no one can take her away.

She will always be by my side

no matter where she is.

Southside Art Gallery

By Mitchell Graves

Last Wednesday we went on a field trip to the Southside Art Center Gallery. I saw my ceramic apocalypse plate, photographic prints, and Kung Fu Panda garden stakes that were for sale. It was the first time me, Regina, Pro, Joe, Monica and Vincent had been to the gallery. It was really, really cool to see my artwork for sale and to see the artwork that my friends at Southside had made. I thought that the gallery was looked really nice and very professional.
